Film (1908; vt Excursion to the Moon). Pathé Frères. Directed by Segundo de Chomón. Written by Segundo de Chomón, based on the story of George Méliès's Voyage Dans La Lune (uncredited). Cast unidentified. 7 minutes. Tinted.
This short silent film from Spanish/Catalan director de Chomón is for the most part a scene-for-scene remake of George Méliès's Voyage Dans La Lune (1902; vt A Trip to the Moon), although a few novelties are introduced into the familiar story: instead of a line of chorus girls, uniformed soldiers more realistically load the projectile into the cannon; the crude Spaceship does not hit the Man in the Moon in the eye, but is rather swallowed by him; while the lunar residents again can be disintegrated with a touch, they now include some beautiful women who, anticipating Cat-Women of the Moon (1953; vt Rocket to the Moon), entertain their visitors with a dance; and the explorers bring one of the lunar women back with them to Earth. Although equally skilful in his special effects, de Chomón unfortunately tended to imitate Méliès's films instead of devising more original stories, explaining the obscurity of this filmmaker. His other films of sf interest include Le Voyage sur Jupiter (1909; vt A Trip to Jupiter). [GW]
