Fles, Barthold

(1902-1989) Dutch-American author, editor, literary agent, translator and publisher; in the USA from 1923 to 1986. Authors represented by his New York agency, which was active from 1933 to 1986, included Guy Endore, L Sprague de Camp, Charles Finney, Dean R Koontz and Leo Perutz. As editor, Fles published four reprint anthologies of magazine stories, beginning with The Best Short Short Stories from Collier's (anth 1948): this comprises 50 selections from Collier's Weekly and includes a story by John Collier. Of the four, the only volume of strong genre interest is the Fantastika-themed The Saturday Evening Post Fantasy Stories (anth 1951), whose nine stories from the Saturday Evening Post include sf by Paul Gallico, Gerald Kersh and Murray Leinster (as Will F Jenkins).
