(1902-1989) Dutch-American author, editor, literary agent, translator and publisher; in the USA from 1923 to 1986. Authors represented by his New York agency, which was active from 1933 to 1986, included Guy Endore, L Sprague de Camp, Charles Finney, Dean R Koontz and Leo Perutz. As editor, Fles published four reprint anthologies of magazine stories, the only one of genre interest being the Fantastika-themed The Saturday Evening Post Fantasy Stories (anth 1951); its nine stories included sf by Gerald Kersh and Murray Leinster (as Will F Jenkins) and a fantasy tale by Paul Gallico.
