Galaxy's Edge

Entry updated 23 May 2022. Tagged: Publication.

US professional magazine available in both print and Ebook form, the print edition being letter-size. It is published bi-monthly by Arc Manor, Rockville, Maryland, under Shahid Mahmud and was edited by Mike Resnick from the first issue, March 2013, until his death in January 2020; thereafter it has been edited by Lezli Robyn.

The magazine was unabashedly nostalgic, being a mixture of reprinted gems from the past and adventurous new fiction. Resnick, a noted raconteur, indulged his delight in sf history in his editorials and in his choice of fiction. From the start reprints ranged from the serialization of Daniel F Galouye's novel Dark Universe (1961) in March-September 2013 to the earliest fantasies by C L Moore, published in her college magazine and not previously reprinted. Other older novels serialized in the magazine include Lest Darkness Fall (December 1939 Unknown; exp 1941; rev 1949) by L Sprague de Camp in March-November 2014 and The Long Tomorrow (1955) by Leigh Brackett in January-November 2016. The magazine picked up Barry N Malzberg's personal column "From the Heart's Basement", which had started in Pulphouse in 1992 and continued through Event Horizon and Jim Baen's Universe. Gregory Benford contributed an occasional science column. Amongst the more regular contributors of new stories were Robert T Jeschonek, Martin L Shoemaker, Brad R Torgersen and Alvaro Zinos-Amaro. Kary English's "Totaled" (July 2014), where a car-crash victim struggles to alert those experimenting on her brain that she is still alive, was nominated for a Hugo award. "I, Arachnobot" (September 2014) by Brian Trent, about a Robot spider, was an ingenious and loving tribute to Isaac Asimov and his Three Laws of Robotics. Another Hugo nominee was Oghenechovwe Donald Ekpeki's "O2 Arena" (November 2021), which won a Nebula as best novelette.

The strength of Galaxy's Edge lies more in its positive mood than in any distinction between its new and reprint fiction or columns. It is a magazine that celebrates sf and welcomes its authors. [MA]
