(1905-1996) US Air Force officer (Lt Colonel) and author, mostly of nonfiction such as Man in Space: The United States Air Force Program for Developing the Spacecraft Crew (1959); he edited The United States Air Force Report on the Ballistic Missile (anth 1958). His Near Future sf novel, Not in Solitude (1959; rev 1961), fictionalizes a first voyage to Mars, closely and vividly describing the dilemmas faced by the military-led travellers as key figures in the expedition mysteriously disappear; it soon becomes apparent that the planet life covering part of the planet comprises a single inimical Hive Mind.
