(1938-2007) Hungarian-born author, critic, painter and academic who in 1956 fled from Hungary to Canada, where she taught in various universities and colleges. She began to publish nonfiction of sf interest with "The Demonic World of Oceania" in Utopian Studies II (anth 1989) edited by Michael S Cummings and Nicholas D Smith. Her book-length critical works of genre relevance are the George Orwell study The Orwell Conundrum: A Cry of Despair or Faith in the Spirit of Man? (1992), and Dystopian Fiction East and West: Universe of Terror and Trial (2001). The latter is a magisterial survey of Dystopias which besides the usual Western classic examples analyses some 30 such works published in Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union and the former Soviet Union from 1920 to 1980.
