Greene, Joseph
Entry updated 12 September 2022. Tagged: Author, TV.

(1914-1990) US author, editor and author for Comics from the late 1930s, scripting various series, including (it has been claimed) various DC Comics Superhero productions such as Superman and Wonder Woman; much of his work was either anonymous, or under variations of his own name or pseudonyms such as Joe Green, Joseph Lawrence, Lawrence Vert, Joseph Verdi and Larry Verdi. He is of sf interest primarily for his involvement in various versions of Tom Corbett: Space Cadet, which see for further discussion. Greene initiated the project, and may have written part of the Television series; it is also very likely that to some undetermined degree he wrote, or co-wrote, or creatively edited the Tom Corbett, Space Cadet sequence of Ties beginning with Stand by for Mars! (1952) as by Carey Rockwell, though, less plausibly, it has also been suggested that Richard Jessup may have contributed at some point. Under his own name, Greene also wrote the Dig Allen series of Young Adult space adventures beginning with The Forgotten Star (1959).
As with many figures who were active in Comics and some other media from the late 1930s until well after World War Two, much of Greene's career is extremely obscure. We list the Tom Corbett, Space Cadet titles below, therefore, without any certainty as to the extent of his involvement. The Dig Allen books seem clearly to be by Greene. [JC]
