(1938-2021) Australian-born artist, long in the UK, sometimes wrongly credited as Bob Habberfield; first active in the early 1960s with record sleeve design and Illustration for the UK-based World Record Club. He was best known for his striking cover artwork for sf, fantasy and Science Fantasy titles published by the London-based Mayflower Books and Granada Publishing/Panther (the latter acquiring the former as an imprint which was subsequently dropped) from 1968 to 1980. Haberfield was particularly associated with Michael Moorcock, producing over twenty covers beginning with the 1968 paperback of Stormbringer (1965; rev 1977); his psychedelic style worked to good effect on the surreal cover painting for Mayflower's 1971 The Final Programme (1968), and melded with evident influence from Buddhist, Hindu and other Asian art for such Mayflower paperback originals as The Eternal Champion (1971), The Knight of the Swords (1971), The Queen of the Swords (1971) and An Alien Heat (1974). Other memorable, mildly surreal covers appeared on 1973 Panther editions of Brian W Aldiss's The Moment of Eclipse (coll 1970) and Colin Wilson's The Mind Parasites (1967). As a commercial artist he seemed to fall silent after 1984. [DRL]
