(1854-1931) US chemist, editor of The Journal of Analytical and Applied Chemistry from 1882 through 1901, and author of The Silica Gel Pseudomorph and Other Stories (coll 1924), which assembles stories with a real or fantasticated relationship to chemistry; in the title story, for instance, a pirate in Suspended Animation turns out to have been transformed into a transparent gel. The stories are mostly amusing. [JC]
