(1975-    ) US author who has become very well known for his successful use of a self-publishing model to create a market for his fiction, though his first work – the Bern Saga sequence beginning with Molly Fyde and the Parsona Rescue (2009) – was released traditionally, fittingly as regards its deliberately traditional Young Adult content. A young female space cadet finds herself travelling the interstellar star ways with a growing cast of companions, encountering and surmounting crises typical of Space Opera, the whole slightly intensified by some Military SF trappings.

Howey came to prominence, however, with the first standalone stories in a sequence whose various subseries are now presented as part of the Silo overseries [for details see Checklist]. The first sequence in this overseries, the Wool tales, are set in a deep Underground Keep known as the "Silo", a hundred stories deep (at first reckoning), and the only refuge for humanity in the Ruined Earth. The Silo seems to be self-maintaining, a stasis made problematical by the seemingly enforced Amnesia of its inhabitants about the deep past, with enforced fears about the unseen desolation on the surface of the planet conveying a dramatic irony out of the SF Megatext. The first season of the Television series Silo (2023 10 episodes) focuses primarily on this initial sequence.. The Shift and Dust subseries are prequels.

I, Zombie (2012) is a Zombie tale. Though his effects are occasionally rough-hewn, Howey is at the same time a sophisticated teller of stories. [JC]
