Pseudonym of Scottish author J McCullough (? -? ) whose Sleeper Awakes novel, Golf in the Year 2000; Or, What We Are Coming To (1892 chap) (see Games and Sports), can initially be understood as a spoof companion to Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward: 2000-1887 (1888), but is in fact a genuine imagined portrait of an Utopian future. The awakened sleeper learns about the new world through conversations mostly conducted on the golf course, a game now technologically enhanced by Machines, including self-scoring clubs; society at large has been much changed by various Inventions, including ocean-crossing underground trains (see Transportation) and Television. Women have been given equal rights (see Feminism), which J A C K's sporting protagonist deplores; but the world is more or less at peace. Under his own name, McCullough also published the nonfiction Golf: Containing Practical Hints, with Rules of the Game (1899). [JC]
