(? - ) US neuroscientist and author, who designate themselves as Persian-Chicagoan, active from 2015 or earlier. They began publishing work of genre interest with "Nothing Less Than Bones" in Pride: Quarterly Magazine for early 2020, which in expanded form became their first novel, The Bruising of Qilwa (2022). The tale cannot safely be described as sf, though in common with many texts published in the twenty-first century sf elements surface in a multi-focal jostling of story types typical of contemporary Fantastika. The protagonist, an apprentice in blood magic, flees persecution in their native land, but finds that Qilwa, which harbours them, is in the grips of a Pandemic, whose characteristics resemble the world-historical pandemic that began in 2019. Young Adult concerns with Identity and other issues may somewhat cloud the focus of the tale. [JC]
