Almost certainly the joint pseudonym of Gena Metcalf (? - ) and Tom Metcalf (? - ), most of whose work has been nonfiction for Young Adult readers. Of sf interest is Pieces of Eight (1989), whose young protagonists travel by Timeslip to the world of the pirate Blackbeard, where they have adventures; this title was announced as beginning the Footprints in Time sequence, but no further volumes appeared. Phil Stephensen-Payne has suggested that their pseudonym derived from the author of A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pyrates (1724), signed as by Charles Johnson, which may have been a pseudonym for Daniel Defoe; this attribution has, however, been strongly disputed. The contemporary "Charles Johnson" should not be confused with Charles R Johnson (1948- ), author of The Sorcerer's Apprentice (coll 1986). [JC]
