(? - ) US academic and psychiatrist who has specialized in the psychic disorders of astronauts; author of nonfiction studies on this subject, including Space Psychology and Psychiatry (2003; rev 2010) with, and topics associated with Astronomy, including Star Maps: History, Artistry, and Cartography (2007; rev 2012). Of sf interest are two novels whose didactic intentions are competently conveyed. The New Martians: A Scientific Novel (2013), set in the Near Future, subjects astronauts returning to Earth from Mars to a series of psychic and/or physical stresses; and explains them. Similarly, in The Protos Mandate: A Scientific Novel (2014), after Climate Change and Overpopulation have inspired settlements on the Moon, Mars and other planets, Homo sapiens still needs to expand; a Generation Starship is launched towards a likely star, and a social contract, known as the Protos Mandate, is instituted to mediate behaviour. The implications and the dangers of this course are discussed knowledgeably. [JC]
