Kinks, The

Entry updated 6 March 2024. Tagged: Music.

Long-lived and very popular UK rock band formed in London in 1963 by the Davies brothers: vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Ray (1944-    ) and guitarist Dave (1947-    ). Most of Ray's songs are very British observations on everyday life, both whimsical and satirical. Their most notable sf lyric is "Supersonic Rocket Ship" (1972), released as a single and on the album Everybody's in Show-Biz (1972). Telling a story of a Spaceship taking society's misfits ("On my supersonic rocket ship nobody has to be hip") away from an overcrowded Earth, to a relaxed calypso-inspired tempo, this is one of their sunniest songs. "Nobody's gonna travel second class / There'll be equality / And no suppression of minorities" sums up its Utopian air and is a refreshing sentiment for a 1970s pop song. [CWa]
