(1856-1929) UK editor, politician (Liberal MP 1906-1910) and author, founder of the literary journal Granta (initially The Granta) in 1889, a member of the "table" of central contributors to Punch 1890-1919 and composing for initial publication there "Mr Punch's" Prize Novels: New Series (coll 1892), which includes parodies of H Rider Haggard (as by Reader Faghard), Jules Verne and the Future-War subgenre. A later volume, The Adventures of Picklock Holes (coll 1901), contains at least one sf story in addition to its parodies of Arthur Conan Doyle. Two of Lehmann's children – John Lehmann (1907-1987) and Rosamond Lehmann (1901-1990) – were important literary figures. [JC]
