(circa 1832-1901) German-born author, in the USA from 1852, specifically in Minnesota, where he witnessed the Battles of New Ulm in 1862 between white settlers and the Sioux nation. Two of his novels are of some sf interest: The Treasure of Montezuma (1888), in which a Utopia is founded in the hidden valley of Friedenstahl with the aid of the eponymous hoard; and Either, Or (1893), a Satire on the Gilded Age in America that leads to a second ideal society.
