Lodi-Ribeiro, Gerson

Entry updated 5 August 2024. Tagged: Author, Editor.

(1960-    ) Brazilian author who has also written as by Daniel Alvaraz and Carla Cristina Pereira; active, initially in Fanzines, from around 1980, he began to publish work of genre interest in Portuguese with "A ética da Traição" in O Atlântico tem Duas Margens: Antologia da novissima ficção cientifica portuguesa e brasileira ["The Atlantic has Two Shores: Anthology of New Portuguese and Brazilian Science Fiction"] (anth 1993) edited by José Manuel Morais (see Portugal); a French translation appeared previously as "L'ethique d'une trahison" (1992 Antares), and later in English as "The Ethics of Treason" (June 2012 International Speculative Fiction) . His book-length fictions, none translated, tend to pastiche and/or genuinely to homage extravagant figures from the SF Megatext, in which he is patently immersed. A Guardiã da Memória ["The Keeper of Memory"] (2011), for instance, is set in an Alternate World, where representatives of Homo sapiens are decried for their all-too-human assumption that Evolution happened naturally, rather than at the behest of Forerunner mentors who crafted a wide conversation of species; Sex between humans and centaurs is described.

Of Lodi-Ribeiro's several Anthologies, one has been translated, the useful Solarpunk: histórias ecológicas e fantásticas em um mundo sustentáv! (anth 2013; trans Fabio Fernandes as Solarpunk: Ecological And Fantastical Stories in a Sustainable World 2018) (see also Solarpunk). [JC]
