Lorrah, Jean

(1940- ) US academic – professor of English at Murray State University in Kentucky – and author. For the sf reader her writing career has perhaps seemed to lack focus, being broken into three areas of concentration. After fan involvement in the Star Trek Open Universe. beginning with Full Moon Rising (coll 1976 chap) and The Night of the Twin Moons (1976), she began to publish generally available sf with the first of her collaborations with Jacqueline Lichtenberg, First Channel (1980), a volume in the latter's Sime/Gen sequence. Though this, along with Channel's Destiny (1982) and Zelerod's Doom (1986), both with Lichtenberg, are worthy companions to Lichtenberg's solo efforts, Lorrah was perceived as the junior partner in the enterprise, a perception eventually modified by the publication of her solo venture in the sequence, Ambrov Keon: A Sime/Gen Novel (1986); a later volume, Sime Gen: To Kiss or to Kill (coll 2004) with Lichtenberg, includes the title novel by Lorrah.
Lorrah's second area of concentration was the Savage Empire series of fantasies concerning Magic: Savage Empire (1981), Dragon Lord of the Savage Empire (1982), Captives of the Savage Empire (1984), Flight to the Savage Empire (1986) with Winston A Howlett (1951- ), Sorcerers of the Frozen Isles (1986), Wulfston's Odyssey: A Tale of the Savage Empire (1987) with Howlett and Empress Unborn (1988) [for full titles and omnis see Checklist]. But it is with her third focus, her Ties for Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation, that she has become perhaps most identified: The Vulcan Academy Murders: A Star Trek Novel (1984) and The IDIC Epidemic: A Star Trek Novel (1988) are contributions to the original Star Trek series; Star Trek, the New Generation: Survivors (1989) and Star Trek, the New Generation: Metamorphosis (1990) are contributions to Star Trek: The Next Generation.
