(1953- ) US author and (primarily) writer for film and television, and television producer. Matheson's work has been at most only fringe sf; he is not to be confused with his father, Richard Matheson, nor with his younger brother Chris Matheson (1958- ), cowriter of the witty screenplay for Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) and its sequel Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991). Matheson's television work includes scripts for The Incredible Hulk (1977-1982), Stop Susan Williams (1979; vt Cliffhangers: Stop Susan Williams) and Amazing Stories (1985-1987; vt Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories). His first published story was "Graduation" (August 1977 Whispers). His two collections of short fiction, predominantly fantasy and horror, are Scars, and Other Distinguishing Marks (coll 1987; rev with teleplay "Magic Saturday" added 1988) and the vast Dystopia (coll 1999).
