The conclusion to the Matrix franchise continues the narrative of The Matrix Reloaded (2003): the machines reach Zion and an epic battle breaks out, while Neo and Trinity embark on a quest to the heart of the machine city to confront the machine intelligence directly and end the war. Neo is blinded and Trinity killed; Neo persuades the machine overmind that the real threat to both humans and machines is Agent Smith, and negotiates a truce and alliance under which Zion is spared, humans will be offered the blue and red pills, and Neo is sent back into the Matrix for a final showdown with Smith.
With its intertwined war and quest strands transparently modelled on J R R Tolkien's The Return of the King (1955), this more exciting but still less conceptually ambitious second sequel to The Matrix (1999) offers some spectacular if largely uninvolving man-on-machine future warfare, and an adequate climactic combat in a Matrix entirely assimilated by replicas of Agent Smith. Neo, Trinity and Morpheus have by this point significantly outstayed their welcome, and the film flickers most into life when it feels least like a Matrix film. A MMORPG, The Matrix Online (2005-2009), was presented as an official sequel, with a sprawling coordinate narrative encompassing the fates of surviving characters (including the death of Morpheus), but was closed down with the deaths of all players before the anticipated resurrections of Neo and Smith.
