(1963- ) US DJ, electronic musician and artist, one of the pioneers and most influential figures in Detroit techno, both in his solo work and as a member of Underground Resistance, from the 1980s onwards. Many entries in his voluminous discography are inspired by sf, their sleek textures, which were very alien sounding when they first appeared, often (successfully) attempting to evoke either spaceflight or the future. Self-explanatory titles include Time Machine (2001), inspired by The Time Machine (1895) by H G Wells, One Man Spaceship (2006), X-102 Rediscovers the Rings of Saturn (2008), Fantastic Voyage (2011), Proxima Centauri (2015), Free Fall Galaxy (2016), A Trip to the Moon (2017), Planets (2017) and Moon – the Area of Influence (2019), among many others. Though these records are mostly instrumental, The Trip – Enter the Black Hole (2024), described by Mills as a "cosmic opera", has some lyrics attempting to convey the experience of leaving Earth and searching for new planets to inhabit. He has also produced two soundtracks for Metropolis (1926) directed by Fritz Lang, one in 2001 and another entitled Metropolis Metropolis in 2023, and a soundtrack for another Lang film, Die Frau Im Mond (1929) in 2015. Mills is also a widely exhibited artist; several of his exhibitions focus on his visions of the future. [CWa]
