(?   -    ) Korean author, raised in USA, currently in China, where her first novel, the Near Future Shanghailanders (2024), is primarily set. What can be seen of the life of a prosperous family in that year, a sighting focused primarily through the maglev train (see Transportation) on which they are travelling to different destinations, conveys a not implausible sense that civilization will not have fallen as soon as 2040. Later sections, each set successively earlier than the previous, ultimately traverse the Covid Pandemic and other crises, viewed here as historical traumata we know the cast has survived; in the end, the tale conveys a sense less of nostalgia than of persistence.[JC]
