(1970- ) US author, married to Eric S Nylund, who began to publish work of genre interest with "Tiger's Eye" in Sword and Sorceress #3 (anth 1992) edited by Marion Zimmer Bradley, and who concentrated on fantasy until the publication of her first novel, Murphy's Gambit (2000), a Young Adult tale set in a moderately Dystopian world dominated by corporations; Murphy herself, raised in "zero gravity" as an oppressed "space worker", turns out to be able to pilot a Faster Than Light Spaceship owned by a competing company. Murphy's Gambit won the Compton Crook/Stephen Tall Memorial Award for best debut novel. Technogenesis (2002) is a Cyberpunk tale whose protagonist, a data miner, must cope with an Internet increasingly used for surveillance purposes in a Computer-dominated world, exposing her to danger when she falls off the Net. The Changeling Plague (2003) is set in a Near Future world where Genetic Engineering is illegal. The protagonist of End in Fire (2005), trapped on a Space Station, observes a nuclear Holocaust on Earth which may foretell the End of the World.
Rather more ambitious, but over-complicated, The Last Mortal Man (2006) – the only volume that has yet appeared of the Deathless sequence – features yet another young woman whose exposure to the upper echelons of a Near Future world exposes her to danger: in this case, she is transformed into a Nanotechnology-driven implant-armoured Superhero in the employ of a mad Immortal whose brain is decaying; a sequel may clarify matters.
