(? - ) US singer-songwriter. His best-known song is "Space Captain", about a space traveller (see Space Flight) who is attracted to a "lovely planet" – presumably Earth – and is stuck there until he brings peace to its inhabitants, at which point they can ascend into the sky again. This became a minor hippy anthem when it was recorded by Joe Cocker on Mad Dogs & Englishmen (1970) and became part of his concert repertoire. It has been covered by several artists ranging from Barbra Streisand to jazz pianist Herbie Hancock. [CWa]
