(1938-    ) Indian mathematician and astrophysicist who was tutored by and was eventually a colleague of Sir Fred Hoyle, with whom he developed what became known as the Hoyle-Narlikar theory of Gravity in what termed out to be a doomed effort to reconcile the physics of gravity with the steady-state model of the universe – as opposed to the Big Bang theory (see Cosmology) now more or less universally accepted – that he adhered to in agreement with Hoyle. His convictions have inspired a number of nonfiction titles (not listed below). Of his many sf novels, mostly written in Marathi, most remain untranslated into English. The Return of Vaman: A Science Fiction Novel (1988) combines a rendering of AI intelligence with elements of the Transcendent; The Message from Aristarchus: A Science Fiction Novel (1992) similarly subjects sf topoi to arguments, sometimes didactic, about the meaning of the universe.
