(1980- ) US author whose first two novels – Everything I Never Told You (2014) and Little Fires Everywhere (2017), both essentially nonfantastic – were very positively received, the second attracting attention for its astute anatomy of the disintegration of a Utopian planned community in 1990s America. Her third novel, the Near Future Our Missing Hearts (2022), intensifies the previous tale's focus on families threatened with dismemberment through its setting in a right-wing America, a Dystopia obsessed with patriotism and scapegoating (the victims of the latter being PAOs, "People of Asian Origin"). The telling is urgent, though a vagueness about how this world actually operates, typical of the Mainstream Writer of SF, may seem to cloud Ng's convinced eloquence about the intimate costs of repression.
