(? - ) American artist, frequently credited as Cliff Nielson, ex-husband of artist Terese Nielsen. He presumably met and married Terese Nielsen while they were both studying at Pasadena's noted Art Center College of Design, and they collaborated on the Marvel Comics miniseries Ruins (1995) before divorcing. Nielsen has since worked very energetically to produce large numbers of book covers, mostly for Young Adult sf and for books set in franchised universes like Earth: Final Conflict, Star Trek, Star Wars and The X-Files, and these are unsurprisingly of little interest. However, he has also garnered more prestigious assignments, including books by C S Lewis and Philip Pullman and the first edition of Stephen King's Dreamcatcher (2001), for which he produced a stylized image of stags running through the snow.
Nielsen can be praised for his bold, simple designs, professionally executed, as exemplified by the arresting portrait of a gun-wielding Cyborg that he painted for the cover of Pamela Sargent's Women of Wonder, The Contemporary Years: Science Fiction by Women from the 1970s to the 1990s (anth 1995). Still, despite having produced over 400 book covers, Nielsen has to date failed to inspire widespread admiration for his work. [GW]
