O'Brien, Johnny

Entry updated 19 January 2026. Tagged: Author.

(?   -    ) Scottish author whose first novel, The Estate (2003), is nonfantastic. He is of sf interest for the Young Adult Jack Christie Adventure sequence beginning with Day of the Assassins (2009), in which young Jack and his friend find themselves on the side of VIGIL, an organisation whose campaign against meddling with the flow of history inspires trips by Time Travel into various eras. Sadly, Jack's father, who is of a Revisionist faction, is on the other side of the Changewar that breaks out. In the first volume, the Revisionists plot to prevent the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, preventing World War One, but with unknowable side-effects. Further instalments – set at the time of the Spanish Armada, and at other linch points – evoke in easy language significant issues about the fractal implications of "tampering" (see also Cultural Engineering).
