(?   -    ) Scottish lawyer and author who began to publish work of genre interest with "Frontier" in Adventurer for January 1987. His first novel Braking Day (2022) is a Generation Starship tale whose First Crew had left an AI-dominated tyranny on Earth, the destination being a planet orbiting Tau Ceti. After six generations have passed, the expedition's three great ships, finally nearing the planet of choice, begin to decelerate, and complex tensions begin to affect the descendants of the original crews. Most of the action is concentrated on one of the ships, the Archimedes, where – not unexpectedly in a twenty-first century example of the form (see Colonization of Other Worlds) – the universe outside turns out not to be a Terra nullius. Time Travel and thriller tropes complexify dramatic reflections on the slave trade, as focused in a 1781 maritime disaster for which recompense is variously sought, in Esperance (2025). [JC]
