(1951- ) US author, chiefly of short crime fiction, translator and editor. Of genre interest are his two reprint Anthologies of the included authors' favourite tales: Top Science Fiction: The Authors' Choice, Selected and Introduced by the Authors Themselves (anth 1984) and Top Fantasy: The Authors' Choice, Selected and Introduced by the Authors Themselves (anth 1985). The selections are mostly well known; the authors' brief introductions are often of interest. Top Science Fiction runs alphabetically from Brian Aldiss and Isaac Asimov to Connie Willis and Gene Wolfe. Top Fantasy includes one newly published supernatural story, Pachter's own "Caves in Cliffs". Companion volumes are Top Crime (anth 1983) [see Checklist below] and Top Horror (anth 1984), the latter published in German and subsequently Dutch translation only. [DRL]
