Working name and usual signature of UK artist Hyman Woolf Perlzweig (1897-1952), of Austro-Hungarian ancestry. Besides serious portraits, some exhibited at the Royal Academy, he created many book covers for various UK publishers from the mid-1920s onward; in the post-war period these publishers included Hamilton and Co and Curtis Warren. His covers in Pulp mode featured on several titles by N Wesley Firth, two by H Kaner, works by other authors of the fantastic, and on such minor magazines as Futuristic Stories and the UK Strange Tales. Though Perl's output was uneven, largely owing to deadline pressure, his depictions of women ("Perl Girls") were often memorable and his work is still collected by aficionados. [DRL]
