Film (2002). Cinetel Films, Inc presents in association with Crystal Sky and VCL a Jay Andrews film. Directed by Jim Wynorksi. Written by Curtis Joseph, David Mason. Cast includes Patrick Muldoon, Theresa Russel and Tim Thomerson. 85 minutes. Colour.
In what seems to be the present day, an organism called Project V.I.P.E.R. is en route to Mars. It gets loose and kills the Space Shuttle crew. Back on earth, a pair of mysterious Clones steal a second V.I.P.E.R. from NASA, but this one also escapes, and gets into the water supply of a small American town. It proceeds to devour locals and grow in size until it is destroyed by a team consisting of a secret government agent (Muldoon), the beautiful scientist who created it (Russel) and the grizzled town sheriff (Thomerson).
Project V.I.P.E.R. – the acronym is never explained – squanders the relatively interesting concept of a Genetically Engineered creature designed to Terraform Mars for human habitation, and quickly becomes a routine story about a Monster threatening a remote American community. The script is incoherent, the effects are poor and the acting is passable at best. [JN]
