(1996- ) US author, initially of fantasy for Young Adult readers, some of this work ambitious and taxing (she has been compared to authors like Shirley Jackson and Kelly Link). She is perhaps best known for A Study in Drowning (2020), set in a past-raddled academy or Keep in Wales with mythopoeisis afoot. Reid is of sf interest for Fable for the End of the World (2025), which is set immersively in a Near-Future world half-drowned through Climate Change and under the surveillance-heavy control of a ruthless global corporation; the young protagonist, sacrificed by her destitute mother as a player in this corporation's Lamb's Gauntlet, where she will be assassinated for the pleasure of the wealthy (see Games and Sports). In this straitened world, romantic emotions evince themselves between her and her female hunter. The tale is told with some eloquence. [JC]
