Reid, Leslie
Entry updated 18 November 2024. Tagged: Author.
(1895-1977) Indian-born author, much travelled, who eventually settled in the UK; in active service during World War One. Two of his early novels – The Rector of Maliseet (1925) and Trevy the River (1928), which features a Mysterious Stranger who fathers a mystery-haunted wandering son – are of supernatural interest. His Scientific Romance Cauldron Bubble (1934), set in a Ruritanian version of Europe, begins almost whimsically in rural Edwal (ie Wales), which in a vaguely described Near Future revolts against Grendel (ie England) with the support of Belmark (ie Germany). A more savage War (ie World War One), with huge casualties, ensues.
Though both authors are listed with the same year of birth, there is no warrant to the suspicion that Reid may have been a pseudonym of L (Leslie) P Hartley. [JC]
