(1946- ) US author and editor who began to publish work of genre interest with the nonfiction anthology Critical Encounters: Writers and Themes in Science Fiction (anth 1979), an early SF in the Classroom text whose nine essays include discussions of Isaac Asimov's Robot stories and Laws of Robotics; Ray Bradbury; Arthur C Clarke's Childhood's End (April 1950 Famous Fantastic Mysteries as "Guardian Angel"; much exp 1953); Samuel R Delany's The Einstein Intersection (1967; 1 chapter restored 1968); Frank Herbert's Dune (1965); Ursula K Le Guin's League of All Worlds/Hain sequence; Theodore Sturgeon; and Robert A Heinlein in the 1960s. A second and final volume in this Critical Encounters sequence was edited by Tom Staicar (whom see). [DRL]
