Rosenbaum, Benjamin

Entry updated 10 June 2024. Tagged: Author.

(1969-    ) US author, currently in Switzerland, much of whose early work has been fantasy, much of it assembled in The Ant King and Other Stories (coll 2008). He is of sf interest primarily for Die Auflösung (2018; presumed original manuscript released as The Unraveling 2021), a Young Adult coming of age novel set the fairly distant future, in an outwardly conventional Space Opera galaxy millennia after Earth has been forgotten (see Long Night). The diasporic Colonization of Other Worlds has long been accomplished, and Homo sapiens has as a species followed various Evolutionary paths, some leading to Posthuman extremes. The tale, which takes the form of a Planetary Romance, is set on a planet where humans are able to modify their appearance (including sexual characteristics) more or less freely. Within this seeming exuberance, two lines of gender intermix and occasionally clash, under the covert supervision of Secret Masters known as Midwives. Not perhaps unusually, this civilization seems about to fall apart just as the protagonist enters into a consequential maturity. The telling of the tale is complex and vivid. [JC]
