Ruber, Peter

Entry updated 10 April 2023. Tagged: Editor.

(1940-2014) Austrian-born US advertising executive, publisher and editor, who published many books by August Derleth 1962-1971, some under his own New York-based Candlelight Press Small Press imprint, which also produced some Sherlockiana (see Sherlock Holmes). A further Candlelight release was his nonfiction study The Last Bookman: A Journey into the Life and Times of Vincent Starrett: Journalist, Bookman, Bibliophile (1968) [for Starrett see The Encyclopedia of Fantasy under links below].

Ruber became editor at Arkham House in 1997 following the departure of Jim Turner, and there worked on many books; a notable example is Arkham's Masters of Horror: A 60th Anniversary Anthology Retrospective of the First 30 Years of Arkham House (anth 2000), which was however criticized for the negative opinions of Arkham authors expressed in some story introductions. Ruber also edited Vincent Starrett's works for The Battered Silicon Despatch Box, the publisher which issued his collaborative book on H Bedford-Jones: King of the Pulps: The Life and Writings of H Bedford-Jones (2003), written with Victor A Berch and Darrell C Richardson. His work at Arkham House was cut short by health problems, most drastically a stroke in 2004. [DRL]
