(1935- ) UK author, almost exclusively of fantasy for Young Adult and younger readers (it is not listed here). At least four of her numerous titles are, however, sf: F-67 (1975) describes the experiences of a family in Africa after Britain has been evacuated; The Watch on Patterick Fell (1978) focuses on the Near Future problem of nuclear contamination, and on protests generated by the enforced degradation of the planet; similarly, Landfall on Innis Michael (1980) is a Near Future tale involving conflicts on a vulnerable island over the storage of nuclear waste; and The Hungry Snow (1980) is set on a Dartmoor beset with weather turbulence and mysterious deaths. That her sf is so clearly inclined to the didactic may have had some negative impact on its popular appeal; but this work is informed, and passionately meant. [JC]
