Schutt, Bill

Entry updated 12 September 2022. Tagged: Author.

(?   -    ) US zoologist and author whose first book, Dark Banquet: Blood and the Curious Lives of Blood-Feeding Creatures (2008), is nonfiction. He is of sf interest for the R J MacCready sequence of Alternate History tales beginning with Hell's Gate (2016), all with J R Finch. The Jonbar Point for this version of the post-World War Two is the discovery of a giant Japanese submarine far up the Amazon River in Brazil, where it has seemingly been infested by Vampire bats, whose alarming sentience is an incipit for gonzo continuations of the narrative, with a mysterious progenitive substance hastening and distorting Evolution. There are Monsters galore, but perhaps more interestingly the authors focus on the rapid coming to consciousness of various oceanic species, including cephalopods capable of defending themselves against homo sapiens. The Russians and the Americans vie with cephalopods for control over the world; the cephalopods may win. [JC]
