Entry updated 10 February 2017. Tagged: Film.

["Scotland Yard Hunts Dr Mabuse"] Film (1963; vt Dr Mabuse vs Scotland Yard) Central Cinema Company Film. Directed by Paul May. Written by Ladislas Fodor, with credit to Norbert Jacques. Adapted from Bryan Edgar Wallace's The Device (1962). Cast includes Dieter Borsche, Klaus Kinski, Werner Peters, Wolfgang Preiss, Peter van Eyck, Agnes Windeck. 90 minutes. Black and white.

Dr Mabuse (Preiss) manifests himself in this efficiently lurid continuation of the Mabuse franchise as a ghostly Reincarnation of his earlier self, focusing his energies and his constantly mutable Identity on London, where through his Invention (or theft) of a mind control Ray he hopes to take over the planet. Various senior police officers, headed by "Major" Bill Tern (van Eyck), resist his takeover of the British government, in the end successfully, though Inspector Joe Wright (Kinski) is turned into a Zombie. Comic relief is provided by Gwendolyn Tern (Windeck), Tern's mother, who helps penetrate the Mabusian fog of illusion. [JC]
