(1967- ) US teacher and author who began to publish work of genre interest with the first installation of a book-length story, "Jack and the Beanstalk" in Galactic Citizen #2 for January 1993, the last of five instalments appearing in June 1994. His Young Adult Deserted Lands sequence beginning with All Is Silence (2014) is set in a post-Pandemic (see Post-Holocaust) America – initially in Bellingham, Washington, then Seattle and elsewhere – and traces the attempts of its teenaged protagonist and her two friends to find her father in Texas, and to begin life again. Despite the series title, America is by no means deserted, and working cellphones usefully lubricate the quest structure of the tale. The pandemic, beginning in the autumn of 2019, has many resemblances to the real-world Covid outbreak of the following year. [JC]
