(1979- ) US author whose Penumbra sequence beginning with Mr Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore (short version 2009 Escape Pod EP215; 2012) is set mainly in and around the eponymous very Near Future (dating from 2009) San Francisco bookshop (see California), and sf and fantasy turns (see Equipoise) to explore the nature of the physical book, its cultural meaning and its probable fate. This discourse is conveyed by a fantasticated nest of stories through which it is possible to trace the effects of an aspirational Secret-Master conspiracy to discover through the contents of a physical book the secret of Immortality. A pendant novella, Ajax Penumbra: 1969 (2013 ebook), rehearses similar material. Annabel Scheme (2010 ebook) is a detective thriller set in an Alternate World version of San Francisco. Fragments of a missing rock star may survive within a Massively Multiplayer Online Game called World of Jesus. [JC]
