(1848-? ) US author whose Noah's Confession (1898) plays surprisingly fast and loose – certainly in terms of nineteenth-century American attempts at popular fiction – with the Bible (see Religion). Here Noah is a citizen of Atlantis, responsible for a series of forbidden nautical Inventions, including the ark in which he and his lover survive the sinking of their land. Later, having migrated, Noah and his family face a second Deluge. The tale seems to have been derived in part from Ignatius Donnelly's Atlantis: The Antediluvian World (1882). [JC]
