(1971-    ) Canadian author who also writes as by Kady Cross, Kate Cross and Kate Locke, each name being attached to a separate subgenre for marketing purposes. Kathryn Smith has focused on paranormal romances, specifically the Brotherhood of the Blood and Nightmare Chronicles series; Kady Cross on Steampunk romances for the Young Adult market, specifically the Steampunk Chronicles beginning with The Girl in the Steel Corset (2011); Kate Cross on adult steampunk romances, specifically the Clockwork Agents sequence beginning with Heart of Brass (2012); and Kate Locke on Alternate History tales, specifically the Immortal Empire sequence beginning with God Save the Queen (2012).

The Steampunk Chronicles tales are set variously in Victorian London and New York; the main protagonist – burdened and gifted with a split personality on Jekyll and Hyde lines (see Robert Louis Stevenson) – that gets her into and out of scrapes erotic and otherwise – interacts with a great deal of Steampunk gear, some of it used (again) to erotic effect, much of it unusually anachronistic. The Clockwork Agents sequence, for adults, features a more sexually experienced female Hero who operates as an undercover agent. The Immortal Empire sequence is set in an Alternate World contemporary Britain run by Vampires, Werewolves and Zombies. [JC]
