Soviet Union
Entry updated 27 April 2026. Tagged: International.
The vast majority of the sf from what until 1991 was the Soviet Union, especially that translated into English, was in the first instance written and published in Russian (see Russia). A small amount of Soviet sf also existed at that time in the various languages other than Russian, notably Ukrainian, in which the dissident writer Oles Berdnyk wrote. Little of this material was then translated into Russian, let alone English. Following the break-up of the USSR there has been a great increase in interest from both within and outside their borders in the native writings of the new (or re-established) nations enumerated in this encyclopedia's overall entry for Slavic Fantastika (which see).
