Spaceape, The

Entry updated 22 May 2025. Tagged: Music, People.

Working name of UK vocalist and poet Samuel Stephen Gordon (1970-2014), sometimes as The Space Ape. He is best known for his collaborations with electronic musician Kode9, of which Memories of the Future (2006) took its title from J G Ballard, and Black Sun (2011) is a loose concept album set after a nuclear Holocaust, inspired by the ravages made by cancer treatment on Gordon's body. His solo Xorcism (2012) explores the possibilities of healing through voodoo ritual, and includes themes of radical medical experimentation of a distinctly sf nature (see Medicine) in the song "He Gave His Body". His deep growl was effectively used on many important recordings, and his early death robbed UK electronic music of one its most distinctive voices. [CWa]
