(1871-1949) UK teacher, publisher and author, most of whose adult life was spent fulfilling academic roles in Japan and India. Most of his work as an author is nonfiction, usually textbooks designed for use, mostly for Indian students. Of sf interest is The Galleon of Torbay [for subtitle see Checklist below] (1908), a Lost Race tale in which a group of settlers from Torbay, Devon are lost deep in America beyond Virginia, and establish a civilization in conjunction with survivors of the Toltec era, which had ended elsewhere centuries earlier.
