Stannard, Julian
Entry updated 14 April 2025. Tagged: Author, Poet.
(1962- ) UK academic, poet and author, active from around 1984. Some of his Poetry, like the poems assembled in Please Don't Bomb the Ghost of my Brother (coll 2023 chap), make use of the toolkit of Fantastika to populate wittily conceived conceits, some unpacked as from the Near Future. He is of specific sf interest for The University of Bliss (2024), a Satire set in the decayed Dystopian Great Britain of 2034, at a university featuring Robot teachers whose sole function, as monitored by the Office of Continuous Improvement (an Orwellian phrasing), is to prepare its students for the corporatized wasteland beyond the campus walls. Economically and culturally isolated, beset by Ecological degradation, the country they are being prepared for has lost its soul. [JC]
