(1840-1914) US author born Frances Matilda Van de Grift; mother by her first husband Samuel Osbourne of Lloyd Osbourne; her second marriage was to Robert Louis Stevenson from 1880 until his death in 1894. Her works of greatest genre interest are the fantasticated Club Story tales assembled in More New Arabian Nights: The Dynamiter (coll 1885) written in collaboration with Stevenson [whom see for further discussion] in the wake of his New Arabian Nights (coll 1882 2vols; cut [second volume eliminated] vt The Suicide Club; And, the Rajah's Diamond 1894; further vt The Suicide Club and Other Adventures of Prince Florizel 1946). Her short fiction for US magazines included the supernatural "Miss Pringle's Neighbors" (June 1887 Scribner's Magazine). [DRL]
