Tales of Moreauvia

Entry updated 19 February 2024. Tagged: Publication.

Canadian Semiprozine published by Creative Guy Publishing, Vancouver, British Columbia, and edited by Peter S Allen; letter-size, planned as semi-annual, but the four issues are dated Spring 2008, Summer 2009, Winter (November) 2010 and finally Summer 2012. It labelled itself "Flights of Historical Fancy", the contents being a mixture of Steampunk, Alternate History and historical sf (see History in SF). The Shared World background was the Alternate World of Moreauvia, which took its name from H G Wells's novel The Island of Dr Moreau (1896). In this setting, Moreau-style Uplift of beasts is scientifically feasible, as is Lamarckian Evolution. Most of the stories have Victorian/Edwardian settings, though "The Elixir" (Summer 2009) by Mark McCann is set in the Middle Ages. Other contributors have included Ardath Mayhar, Ruth Nestvold and Aliette de Bodard; the first issue featured an Interview with Gary K Wolf and his story "Who We Need Here is Mr Thomas Edison" (Spring 2008), a Time-Travel western. Problems over the website domain contributed to delays in the magazine's schedule; it ceased with the fourth issue. [MA/DRL]
